CHARGE OF NEGLIGENCE.

In connection with the recent accident at South CI Si ton, when four men were killed, the coroner's inquest found ihat the fall of earth s was due to the negligence of the manager of the colliery, who has been committed for .trial for manslaughter. The congestion of shipping at the Newcastle Harbour owing to the inability of the present shipping appliances and mooring accommodation to cope with the demand is causing dislocatjfinjof the coal trade. The population of the Commonwealth, exclusive of aborigines, on December 31st, was 4,119,581, the males numbering 2,173,645 and the females 1,945,963. PRISONEE EE-CAPTUEED. Eeceived May 8, 10.2 p.m. SYDNEY, May 8. A prisoner, named Cant, who escaped from the Berrima Gaol on April 19th. was re-arrested at F.orbes after an exciting chase, during which he fired a pea rifle at the police, who replied with revolvers. The prisoner also used the butt of a rifle and his teeth in resisting capture. A stolen horse, sulky e n i tent wc;e found in his i oss:ssion. AN OVERLAND RIDE., Received May 9, 12.44 a.m. SYDNEY, May 8. Thejcyclist Birtles arrived at Sydney, from Fremantle, at'd was welcomed by a large gathering. He left Fremantle on December 26th, and finished in excellent condition, after having ridden 4,400 miles.
