TURF NOTES. (By Zetland.) The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting will open at Hastings to-day. The acceptances through- - out are exceptionally numerous for this time of the year, and the racing should be decidedly interesting. A number of Wairarapa sportsmen left yesterday in order to be present at the gathering, and this district is well represented by some of the best of our contestants. The following may be prominent in the settlement of the events: — Hack Hurdles.—Te Uira and Merriwui. Nursery Handicap.—Ox ton and Rosalie. Hawke's Bay Cup.—Sir Tristram and Mystification. Maiden Hack.—Hinetitimata and Blue River. Porikawa Hack.—Gauze and Erl Kirg. v Porangahau Handicap. Lady Annie and Kitchenmaid. Karamu Hurdles—Black Reynard and Pushful. Autumn Handicap.—Kurawaka and Millenial. ' . . . At Riverlands, Blenheim, this afternoon, the first day's events of the Marlborough Racing Club's Autumn Meeting will be run. The averao;e of acceptances, i* better than usual for a Blenheim gathering. A fair number of Wairarapa horses have been taken over, and it is expected that a portion of the stake money will come this way. The following should run well in'their respective races: — Autumn Hack.—Moata and Barley. Hack Hurdles.—Repulse and Te Kaihui. Marlborough Cup.—Narcotic and Silken Rein. . Flying Handicap.—Platypus and Scotch Rett. Welter Handicap.-Truthful and Devon ia. Ladies' Bracelet.—Tiwha and Makino. Electric Hack.—St. Killian and » Kaiuku.
HASTINGS TRAINING NOTES
By Telegraph—Press Association. HASTINGS, May 7. Only a few gr.liops were indulged in on the course this morning. Grand Slam and Riflemaid were locked together at the end of six furlongs run in lmin 22sec. Gold Crest and Gauze covered a similar distance in lmin 21 sec. Strathcona ran away from Matakokiri over six furlongs on the plough in lmin 20sec. King Billy beat Gazeley over six furlongs, run in lmin 23sec. Robin Link ran four furlongs in 50sec. Thi; best gallop of the morning was witnessed between Volume, >it. Joe and Sandix. Sandix got m bad start, but was only half a length behind Volume at the finish. St. Joe was half-a-dozen lengths away. The weather is now beautifully fine. NEW ZEALAND JOCKEY IN ENGLAND. (Post Corresponden.) DUNEDIN, May 7. Advice has been received here that Hewitt had his first successful mount in England on March 23rd. At Liverpool he rode Major Edward's five-year-old colt Rarer Sort in the Maghull Plate, a weight-for-age race, over a mile and a furlor.g. His mount was an outsider in the field.
