The Prince of Wales, the Duke of Connaught, Foreign Ambassadors, the Agents-General, and Mr Rudyardl Kipling welte present at a banquet given by the Royal Academy in honour of the Premiers. The toast of "The Dominions Beyond the Seas" was substituted for the usual one of "Literature and Science." It was proposed by the president of the Academy (Sir E. J. Poynter), who referred to the artistic bodies of Australasia, and said it; seemed certain that the colonies would soon have a national art of their own, taking perhaps unexpected developments. Mr Deakin, responding, said already they had in the colonies something native, not merely imitative, But the initiative arising in Australia laboured under unexpected artistic; disabilities. The original settlers were strangers in a strange land,, weighed down with deep-seated memories of the Old Country, ar.d blind to the fascination of their new home. Hence the unexpected note of melancholy. This false Australian art must look forward, not backward, The vigour of the people, combined with the stimulating and exhilarating sunshine and atmosphere, the boundless natural resources, and the beauties of Australia, yielded deeper qualities under the inspiration of fiery faith in the destiny of their country. *
