DISCUSSION ON PREFERENTIAL TRADE.

At the imperial Conference, Mr Asqnith, Chancellor of Jthe Exchequer,' Mr Lloyd-George, President* of the Board of Trade, and a dozen' Treasury, Board of Trade, and India Oflieo officials were present at the discussion.on preferential Wade. .Lord Elgin, Secretary of for the' Colonies, invited Mr Deakin to>: open the'discussion. ' ;':! Mr' Deakin thought Sir Wilfrid; Laurior might like to say a few preliminary words. ' J .':■ Sir WifrJd Laurier made a short statement explaining that Canada had actually given .preference to the Motherland, and now awaited some action on the part of the Motherland. He intimated his intention to move the' reaffirmation of the preference •resolutions-carried by the Imperial Conference in 1902, though he understood Australia proposed W take similar action. ' Mr j Deakin. remarked that Australia's resolutions preferred an explicit request for preference from the* 1 Motherland. , 1 .Mr Deakin was speaking when the copference ' adjourned to' attend a luncheon given by colonial-born "'members.of .the House of Commons.
