BUTTER AND CHEESE.
*- —- GOVERNMENTAL REPORTS FROM LONDON. The Secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following report from the Produce Commissioner in London : "Unfortunately since report concerning the market, for . butter there has not been any improvement to record. The only satisfaction that can bo obtained iy that, there has l.n;eii dui'ityr the .past week a somewhat steadier tone, and values have not receded further. The .very heavy supplies of colonial butter, which this year show, both landed and now on the water, a great increase over those of last year at this time, has undoubtedly been the chief cause of the decline in values. I have made extended enquiry as to the cause,of the depreciation in price, and can ascertain no other reason. Trade throughout the country is good, retail demand is satisfactory, and every other condition is such as to firm the market under usual conditions. There are, so far, no stocks being placed in cold store; the price has not come sufficiently low to warrant speculation in that maimer in the face of prospects of large supplies. It is reported on the market here that Siberia will show a large increase in her shipments of butter this season, and that these will commence to arrive in this country earlier than usual. This outlook naturally will check speculation inj colonial butter for cold storing. The cheese market has been steadily good, although during the past day or two it has been scarcely so strong, and prices have been accepted for New Zealand cheese sixpence per cwt lower than last quoted. There does not, however, seem to be any likelihood of values falling very much. There is a good demand throughout the country, stocks are in reasonable compass, and holders are firm in their ideas. It is not probable, therefore, that any great change will take place before all the New Zealand shipments are disposed of."
