MAURICEVILLE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the Mauriceville County 'Jouncil was held on Saturday last. Ther i were present: —CrsKummer (chai/man), Heckler, Jackson, Wall and D.igg. . A notification was received from the Minister of Public Health stating that, in view of the fact that several of the local authorities which agreed to contribute towards the salary of a sanitary inspector have declined to continue the present arrangement, whereby the Department pays the inspector's salary, it will therefore cease on May 31st. The County Clerk, Masterton, wrote stating that an application had been made to the Treasury to transfer the Mangarei Bridge Loan to the Mauriceville County.

The Chief Engineer of Railways, in reply to the Council's inquiries respecting the agreement re taking over the piece of railway land traversed by the present road at the overhead bridge, wrote stating that the transfer would entail on the Council no liability to maintain the bridge, and in the event of the hill side slipping and damaging the railway the local body will not be held liable for damages. The Chairman was authorised to sign the agreement. The inspector reported that he had examined the old bridge timber lying on the roads, and considered it hardly fit for using along with the ironbark got for the bridge on Toll-gate Road. The Chairman and Cr Heckler were appointed to inspect the timber at the Maori Bush and decide whether it is advisable to use it.

Cr Dagg was authorised to get the bridge on Mangarei Road repaired. The inspector reported that the washout on Mangaoronga Road would take about 190 cubic yards of filMng. It was decided to put in a large pipe culvert at a higher level than the one washed out. The inspector's suggestion to put a few loads of. metal on Mauriceville North Road was approved. Metal patching was authorised on Mount Bruce road. Cr Wall reported that Messrs Coradine and Whittaker had two men repairing the south end of the road. Crs Dagg and Heckler were appointed to confer with'the County Solicitor re the agreement With Mr Wrightson under which metal may be obtained from his- land on Mangamahoe Road. The Clerk was instructed to prepare an agreement re metal pit for Mr Heckler's signature. Cr Heckler was granted six months leave of absence on the occasion of his visit to Great Britain. The Chairman and Councillors joined in wishing him a.pleasant time, and hoped to see him return to occupy the seat he had so long filled. Accounts amounting to £l3l 8s 5d were passed for payment.
