IN VIOLENT ERUPTION,

Eeceived April 30, 8.51 a.m. ROME, April 29. Stromboli is in violent eruption. An earthquake shock shattered windows and broke the cable between Lipari and Stromboli. (Stromboli and Lipari are both islands of the Lipari Group, a number of volcanic islands in the Mediterranean, 15 to 30 miles from the north coast of Sicily, and comprised in the Italian province of Messina. Lipari capital of Lipari is a town of some 12,000 people. The two active volcanoes of the group are Stromboli and Vulcano. Stromboli*? has an ancient crater in the centre, but the one which has been active in recent years is more to the north. It hfts been in the habit of emitting flames or illuminated vapour, but no lava. Stromboli has been called the "lighthouse of the Mediterranean.")
