RESCUER OF VARISCHETTI. Received April 26, 10.37 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 26. The diver Hughes had a great reception on his arrival from Adelaide. A large crowd carried him shoulder high to a carriage. He was subsequently welcomed by Sir John Forrest, Acting Prime Minister of the Commonwealth, and the Mayor, at the Town Hall.
AMALGAMATED BREWERIES. Received April 26, 10.37 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 26. Negotiations have been completed for the amalgamation of all the principal brewing companies of Melbourne, under a new proprietary, with a capital of a million. THE KYNETON TRAGEDY. Received April 26, 10.51 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 26. The police have arrested at Broadmeadows a young German, named Schonbeer, in connection with the sanguinary murder of the swagger Panton, in his camp near Kyneton. Prisoner confessed that while he and Panton were camping together, on April 18th, they quarrelled owing to his' refusal to agree to a certain suggestion Panton made. Panton threatened to stab him and rushed at him with a knife. Schonbeer snatched up a tomahawk and struck Panton twice. He then took to the bush, wandered and was lost. He was for some time without food. ® At the time of his arrest he was wearing the murdered man's shirt and boots. He states that Panton gave them to him.

YACHTING. Received April 26, 10.52 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 26. In view of the there is no likelihood of the new defender of the &ayonara Cup being built this year, the Royal Yacht Club has accepted the offer of the yacht Sayonara as defender of the Cup in the race against the Sydney yacht Awanui.

Received April 20, 10.8 a.m. ADELAIDE, April 26. The owners of the barque Norma, which was run down by the ship Ardencraig, claim £24,000 damages from the owners of the Ardencraig, £4,000 representing freight on the cargo. '
COAL LUMPERS' STRIKE. Received April 26, 10.37 a.m. SYDNEY, April 26. The coal lumpers. have issued an appeal to the unionists of Australia, asking for sympathy and moral assistance, and urging them to do their utmost to prevent such an influx of &s might enable the employers to succeed in their desire to crush the Coal Lumpers' Union. The delegates of the union attended the Labour Council, and explained the position. They stated that the only obstacle in the way of a settlement is the refusal of the employers to remove the stevedores' foreman to whom the lumpers object. The Council has oifered the services of its executive officers, with a View to bringing about an early settlement. Received April 26, 11.48 p.m.. SYDNEY. April 26. The coal lumpers' ultimatum states that not take any part in the conference to*be -held with a view to coming to a settlement,, unless the unpopular stevtedores' foreman is dismissed. This has had no effect on the attitude qf the employers, who express their determination to stand firm. They declare that the labour obtained through the bureau in conjunction with the ships' crews is sufficient for the requirements. The delegates of the Seamen's Union conferred with the Employers' Association with reference to the situation. The result has not been disclosed, but it is reported that the local unions, which have been approached by the strikers, show little sympathy with the extension of the difficulty. The strikers relax none of their vigilence or confidence. Their picketing sytsem is very complete. The coaling of the Banffshire and Aorangi is being carried out by nonunionists.

In the course 6f his presidential address to the Congregational Union, Dr. Gooman declared that the theory of the absolute inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible could no longer be held. Inspiration must rest upon the results of criticism. Congregationalists were indebted to historic theology, but were not bound by it. LOCALLY MADE GOVERNORS. Receiyei April 26, 10.8 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 26. Sir John Forrest, Acting Prime Minister of the Commonwealth, advocates the appointments of State Governors being made in Australia. He says the only objection at present is that persons of the necessary education and culture cannot be obtained here. NEW STEAMERS. Received April 27, li 9 a.m. PERTH, April 26. Advices received by the Ormuz state that the Orient Company intend to replace the Oruba, Oroya, and I Orotava, on the Australian line, with three new 11,000 ton. steamers, the j first sailing in October. ,
