THE EKETAHUNA ELECTIONS.

MR A: H. HERBERT THE FIRST MAYOR.

The elections for the first Mayor and six Councillors for the newlyformed "Borough of Eketahuna ;took place on Thursday. There were three candidates for the Mayoralty, viz., Messrs A- H. Herbert, F. C. Turrior, and T. Parsons, and eleven caididates for seats on the Council. All through the campaign the keenest excitement prevailed, and the candidates' meetings were, it is stated, attended by even larger audiences than those in connection with the Parliamentary elections, Polling day was wet, but this did not damp the enthusiasm of the electors, who turned out in force to vote for their chosen candidates. All day there were little groups of voters standing in front of the polling booth, which was situated in the County Council office. Vehicles were running in all directions, bringing the electors to the poll, while two of candidates for the Mayoralty had each a motor car in which to carry their constituents to the polling booth. Out of 447 voters on the roll, 365, recorded their votes, which is a splendid record, considering the state of the weather. By far the greater majority of those who failed to record their votes were absent from the district.' At 5.30 p.m. a thunderstorm broke over the town, and despite the subsequent heavy s rain, there was a large crowd in front of the polling booth at 7 o'clock, anxiously waiting for the declaration of the returns. It was 9 o'clock before the Returning Officer, Mr J. Prendevilie, announced the results, and by that time the crowd had increased considerably. The polling for the Mayoralty resulted as follows :

Mr A. 11. Herbert ... 187 Mr F. C. Tumor ... 135 , Mr T. Parsons ... 29 ' Informal ... 14 Mr Herbert was declared duly elected amid loud cheering. The returns for the Council were as follow, the first six being elected: —Messrs J. A. Haswell 217, J. F. Baillie 208, J. J. Knight 182, F. H. Wise 180, J. J. Mead 173, F. 1 J. Bright 165. F.
