TREES IN PINE STREET.

DISCUSSION AT BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.

At the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, Cr Hoar brought up the matter of the ornamental- trees that had been planted by the Council on the side of the footpath in Pine Street. He asked if the trees were to be allowed to remain theiv, and stated that in a few years time there was not the slightest doubt that the roots of these trees wouid lift the asphalt on the footpath, and after all the money that had been spent in laying down the path it would be ruined by their own handiwork. The Engineer, on being asked his opinion on the mutter, confirmed Cr Hoar's statement that the trees would in time raise the asphalt and damage the footpath. Cr Ewington stated that the trees had been planted alongside footpaths in Wanganui and were a great success. Cr Hoar said that in Wanganui the asphalt was cracked wherever the trees were growing. Cr Elliott thought that owing to young fellows breaking the trees down when going home at night, time there was not a chance of their surviving. Other Councillors took part in the discussion, but as there was no motion on the subject it was decided that until the trees began to show signs of damaging the footpath no move would be made in the matter.
