OUR LONDON LETTER.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, March 8. ■y-Mr S. S. Blackburn is returning tto Christchurch by the Kaipara on - April 4th. Mr Blackburn's name is : known to others besides chess players ths wide world over. Mr Addison J. Newbould, of . Hawke's Bay, came by the German • liner Scharnhorst. He has purchased • a beautiful motor car, and will visit .frienda and relatives in Durham and .Staffordshire. He will also take the opportunity of visiting many of the Old Country's beauty spots during his sojourn here. He expects to return about October. Mr and Mrs J. Stuart White, and Master White, of Dunedin,arrived on February 19th by the Shaw Savill's E.M.S. Corinthic, touching at Monte Video, St. Vincent, and* Santa Cruz. They had a fine passage. Mr White purposes remaining a year or so in connection with automobile business, and is visiting Birmingham and Coventry just now. Mr Alex. J. Laurie, of Onehunga, and Mrs Laurie, leave London by the Corinthic to-day. They are on the vrdy to Melbourne, and after three months' stay there, they return to the colony. They have been travelling in Ireland and Scotland, where Mr Laurie has interested himself very much in agricultural affairs, hejhaving undertaken to collect information for 1 the'j|executive of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, of which he is a member. Miss A. JR. Laird, of Auckland, who has just come to London on a fihort visit, has been in Folkstone since last October. Shs has also spent a considerable time in Woking. She expects to return to New Zealand at of the year. Mr and Mrs Henry Hope, of Wellington, came by the Omrah, leaving it at Marseilles to spend a week in Paris, en route. After London, they will visit the Isle of Wight, Paris and Berlin, returning here in June in time to see the Derby. They expect to be here about six months. Mr P. Spelman Gleeaon, the son of Mr P. Gleeson, of Napier, leaves for the colony on the 15th inst., by the P. and 0. liner India. Mr Gleeson has ■been very busy investigating the brewery industry, and has visited V nearly all the large breweries. He has spent a year with Dr. Moritz, of London, studying the analytical side of the business. £ Mr S. E. Lamb, wh:> leaves by the Ruapehu, about 20th inst. is on the way to Auckland, to take up tli3 duties of lecturer in mechanical engineering at the University there. Mr Lamb, who was head of the engineering department of the Municipal Technical Institute at Portsmouth, has been two years as science master ■at Gravesend Technical School, and six and a-half at Portsmouth Technical Institute. He has also gained 'considerable experience at the Royal College of Science, London, and at the Naval Dockyard at Devonport. He is 32 years of age, is (married, ;and has two daughters. Mr Lamb holds the degree of B.Sc., London, and is an A.R.C.S., London, and an Associate Member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. Miss C. Hudson, of Feilding, has been visiting her mother in Cornwall, \and has also taken trips to Luccrnt, and Scotland. She arrived here last June, via San Francisco, and intends returning via Suez about May. Mr A. Bertleman, of Dunedin, left Southampton, for the Argentine Republic, by the Araguaya on the 22nd inst. He arrived here six months ago, and has visited the principal manufacturing towns of England and Scotland. He will probably return to New Zealand after spending some time in the Republic. Miss Irene Skinner, of New Plymouth, who has been here since May last, expects to remain some considerable time longer, returning ultimately via Suez. She has seen a good deal of England during her visit, particularly the northern and southwestern counties.
