Received April 18, 9.51 a.m. 'MELBOURNE, April 18. The Colonial Sugar Company has purchased the business of the Poolman Company'arid Poolman Brothers, of Melbourne and Sydney. With these purchases, nearly the whole of the sugar trade of Australia is now in the hands of the company. THE PLAGUE. Received April 18, 7.53 a.m. BRISBANE, April 18. The plague patient who was discovered here is dead. Received April 18, 9.48 p.m. SYDNEY, April 18. A case of plafeue is reported at Redfern, and another in Sussex Street. ANTHRAX. Received April 19, 12.14 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 18. ( A man suffering from anthrax was admitted to the'hospital. The chairman of the Board of Health states that a careful investigation shows that last week a firm of stock and station agents 'imported a consignment of hides from New Zealand, which were shipped on a coastal steamer at New Plymouth. Afterwards they were placed on board the Monowai. Only one,bundle of hides was handled at Melbourne, and from this the man appears to have contracted the disease.
THE FRUIT FLY. Received April 18, 9.51 a ADELAIDE, April 18. The Government has prohibited the importation of any fruit into the State except by sea. TRANS-CONTINENTAL CYCLING. Received April 18, 7.53 a.m. ADELAIDE, April 18. A cyclist named Birkes has arrived from Fremantie, which he left on Boxing Day. He travelled 3,185 miles, and experienced considerable hardships through want of water in the early part of the journey, when he attempted the coastal route, but was driven back.
