Received April 18, 9.10 a.m. LONDON, April 17. The'ltalian Ambassador in Londbn has asked Mr Deakin to support King Victor-Emmanuel's scheme for colleges. WHITE LABOURERS FOR QUEENSLAND. Received April 18, 10.19 a.m. LONDON, April 17. Mr W. M. Hughes, one of the Australian delegates to the Navigation Conference, is at present in Vienna trying to engage several hundred labourers for the Queensland sugar plantations. He is offering free passages to-Queensland. Overtures to engage men in Italy have failed. ThejEmigrants Office in connection with the Colonial Office warns British emigrants to remember the climatic conditions of the sugar farms of North Queensland, and considers it very questionable whether they will be able to work under the tropical conditions. * Recruiting for ordinary farm labourers is proceeding satisfactorily, but there have been many defections since the conditions were fully plained. Received April 19, 12.14 a.m. SYDNEY, April 18. The Mr Hughes mentioned in the cable as engaging labour in Vienra is an employee of the Colonial Sugar Company, not Mr W. M. Hughes. Bryce, late Secretary fpr Ireland and now Ambassador at, Washington, as being completely satisfactory and final. ! A man entered the railway Station at Saint Paul (Minnesota) and compelled a clerk to open a safe. The man took 25,000 dollars and escaped. A BREACH OF TREATY. The Times' Tangier correspondent reports that indignation and astonishment are expressed in diplomatic circles owing to an action by Sid Hadji Mohammed missioner for Foreign Affairs, who, in defiance of the Algeciras Treaty, a contract with a German firm for the construction of a boulevard on the sea front at Tangier, and of a new system of drainage. The Senate of New York State has passed a Bill fixing female teachers' minimnm salaries in public schools at £144, thus'bringing about equality of salary with male teachers. The approval of the Assembly is assured. This step means an aggregate in*crease of a million sterling in the State's expenditure.
