ALLEGED THEFT OF GOLD.
By Telegraph—Press Association
DUNEDIN, April 14. About three weeks ago the police received information that a Chinaman named Chow Kee was coming - to Dunedin to sell gold leaf, which was believed to have been stolen. The police met him on arrival at the Dunedin Railway Station, searched him, and found about 20 oz of gold in his possession. He explained that he had got this in a mining claim at a place called Blackman's, where he had worked between three and four years ago. The police would not believe the story, and retained possession of the gold. Since that they have been prosecuting enquiries, and in the meantime Chow Kee was allowed his liberty. A man named Riderer. a dredge hand on the No. 1 Otago dredge at Miller's Flat, from time to time rode on his bicycle from Miller's Flat to Alexandra, where Chow Kee kept a boarding-house, and the presumption was that he took little parcels of gold to sell them to the Chinaman. The Inspector of Police has now received a telegram from Detective Cooney, at Miller's Flat, as follows: —"I have arrested Riderer. He admits stealing gold from the No 1. Otago dredge, and receiving £34 from Chow Kee." The trial of Riderer will probably be held.at Alexandra.
