TURF NOTES.
(By Zetland). THE WELLINGTON MEETING. The acceptance of only sixteen horses for the Thompson Handicap, out of a nomination of fifty, is somewhat disappointing as regards numbers, but when the list is gone through it will be seen that the best of the contestants remain in. The Stead stable is represented by that fast mare Munjeet, the topweight Isolt having been thrown out of training. Pink 'Un is looked upon as a sure starter, and at the weight, Bst 121b, should see the mile out, unless the course be too heavy on the day. Marguerite, the runner-up in the Great Autumn Handicap, is well treated at,Bst 101b, and will carry the confidence of the Porirua stable's party. Lord Soulfc, Bst 41b, also remains in the Railway Handicap. If he is reserved for the latter, his chance v could be assessed as a good one, but as to his ability to galiop a mile at top in first-class company little is yet known by the public generally. Aeolus is decidedly a good horse over the Thompson Handicap distance, but at the Auckland meeting, in Easter Week, finished up lame, and may therefore not be seen at his best on Wednesday next. The Gold Reef gelding, Contender, is | said to carry the confidence of his ' owner for the race under notice, and . Submarine is so well just now that his chance of being very prominent at the finish cannot be decried. Mystification, 7fct 91b, the winner of the race last year, has lost the soreness that troubled him during the summer, and may prove one of the hardest horses to beat. St. Joe, 7st 81b, has not won a race since November last, and has not been seen out in public of late. Pas Seul is a recent winner, as is also Mahqta. The latter has been well backed, both straight-out and in doubles. Most of his victories have been achieved somewhat easily, and it may be that the strong support accorded him will be justified. Helen Portland, Fontenoy, The Lark, Sherlock Holmes and Chatterer are all performers of merit, and there is every likelihood of the race being a really brilliant one. A better idea of the chances of the respective candidates will be gained early next week whenjtbey will have arrived at|Trentbam. In the meantime I like the chances of Munjeet, Marguerite, Mystification and Pas Seul,. P'ourteen have Leen accepted for in the Railway Handicap, out of twenty-three nominated. • This, however, includes three which are in the Thompson Handicap. Full Rate, 9st, is expected better form than at Feilding last week. Lord Soult, Bst 131b, is well enough treated to run a great r?ce if reserved for his favourite distance of six furlongs, and the same remarks apply to* Contender. Gawain, 7st 111b, may not be forward enough to do himself justice, but Volume and Lady Annie, at 7st 101b, both read decidedly well. The latter, now owiied by Sir George CliiFoid, is possessed of a good dash of brilliancy. Sunbonnet, 7st 41b, has shown her pace of late, and Helen Portland, 7st 61b, scored in good company at the Auckland meeting. The Orrnond stable will be represented by Medallist, and Martello will do battle for the Tilley stable. With Sea King, Platypus, Savoury and Chicane to make up the field, the race should be well worth witnessing. To name four likely ones at the present juncture, I would suggest Lady Annie, Full Rate, Medallist, and Sunbonnet.
