John Aird and Son have contracted to add twenty-four feet to the height of the Assouan dam.
COLONIAL NAVAL MILITIAS. Received April 7, 4.34 p.m. LONDON, April 6. The Navy League will memorialise the Colonial Premiers urging co-oper-ation with the Motherland and suggesting the establishment of colonial naval militias and offers of men employed in the colonial mercantile marine for the British navy. They also recommend that naval Imperial reserve vessels should be stationed at colonial ports to enable militiamen to drill and cruise; officers and men to be interchangeable with the British navy.
COMPENSATION. Received April 7, 4.54 p.m. LONDON, April G. Great Britain's suggestion, that inasmuch as the local auhorities were not to blame, China should compensate Dr. Home and Mr F. Eadie, who were attacked by Chinese pirates at /Tungan last year, has been accepted. Dr. Home will receive £I,OOO and Mr Eadie £IOO.
AMEER OF AFGHANISTAN. Received April 7, 4.36 p.m. CALCUTTA, April 6. The Ameer of Afghanistan is holding a durbar. He satisfactorily explained to the Mullahs that there was nothing in Free Masonry opposed to Mohammedism, and declared that there was nothing in the Moslem scriptures to prohibit Mussalmans eating with Christians. .
INSTITUTE OF MARINE ENGINEERS.
Received April 7, 4.36 p.m. LONDON, April 6. Sir J. G. Ward, Premier of New Zealand., attended the annual meeting of the h .iitute of Marine Engineers. He presented Lord Pirrie with a gold badge from the New Zealand marine engineers. Sir Joseph also presented a similar badge to Mr Archibald Denny.
THE NAIROBI FLOGGINGS
LONDON, April 5. The Daily Mail reports that Europeans at Nairobi, in British liast Africa, have forwarded a protest against the sentences passed on Captain Grogan and others. Lord Elgin, Secretary of State for the Coionies, upholds the sentences on the ground that the floggings were illegal assault:. (Captain G;ogan, President of the Colonists' Association of East Africa, and four othpr whites at Nairobi, were sentenced to terms of imprisonment ranging from one month to seven days, and were also fined, for Hogging three negroes who had insulted white women without receiving punishment at the hands of the authorities.)

NEW YORK,.April 5. Statistics published in Washington show that 1,200,000 decrees of divorce have been granted in the United States in twenty years, averaging 70 divorces to every 100,000 of the population.

MADRID, April 5. The Rio Tin to Copper Company, of Spain, last year made a profit of two millions sterling and declared a dividend of 110 per cent.

LONDON, April 5. Queen Alexandra has left London to join King Edward ajb Toulon. The Dowager Empress of Russia, who has been visiting her sister Queen Alexandra, has started for Biarritz.
AUSTRALIAN MAILS. LONDON, April 5. Captain Collins, 'the Commonwealth agent, denies that his suggested alterations as to the designs of the mail steamers (which the Australian Mail Syndicate proposed to construct in terms of its contract with the Federal Government) delayed the commencement of construction, as the syndicate cordially accepted his suggestions. Atlhough construction has not commenced, the syndicate has purchased some material with a view to construction.
NEW HEBRIDES. Received April 7, 5.30 p.m. LONDON, April G. Reuter states that the AngloFrench Commission meeting will be held in May instead of April. The Commission will discuss the details of the New Hebrides Convention, rn~ cluding the land claims and the details of the new Administration. Sir Eldon Gorst will probably represent the Foreign Office, and Messrs 11. B. Cox and Dale the Colonial Office.
