THE WHITELEY MURDER

Received April 2, 8.44 a.m. LONDON, April 1. Many newspapers complain of the agitation on behalf of Rayner, who was sentenced to death for the murder of Mr Wm. Whiteley, but to whom a respite has been granted by the Home Secretary with a view to commuting his sentence to imprisonment for life. The Daily Mail declares the agitation is a grave public scandal, reducing the administration of justice to a sentimental travesty.
