CATHOLIC SCHOOLS' PICNIC.

The children attending the Catholic Schools at Masterton and Pahiatua held a picnic on the Eketahuna Sports Ground, yesterday, arid'from every point of view the outing was a decided success. The weather was all that could be desired, while the spot' chosen for the picnic was an ideal one for the purpose. About three hundred children and adults left Masterton by train at 10 a.m., and a train load of people, numbering about; 250, came from Pahiatua. In addition, the district around Eketahuna, supplied another 200 persons, so that the attendance at the gathering was) estimated at over 700. The day was spent in a very enjoyable manner, all the adults working strenuously ';'W make everything pass off pleasantly for the children. There were numerous races for boys and girls; and the winners were rewarded with valuable prizes. Chief interest was centred in the race for the Schools' Cham-, pionship, which was won by A* O'Connor, of Pahiatua, with S. Hoar, of Masterton, second, after a splendid race. The winner received a golf! medal, and the second boy a silver medal. Both medals were presented by the Masterton Hibernian Society. There were 25 entries for the ladies' race, which was run in five heats, and resulted in a win for Miss |Mi O'Leary (Masterton), Miss K. Gogcins (Masterton) being second, I and "Miss Clarke (Masterton) third. The girls' race (over 12 years) was I won by Miss K. O'Leary, of MasterI ton. I Another attraction was the football match between the Masterton and Pahiatua boys, the former winning, by three tries to one. The Revs. Dean McKenna, Father T. McKenna, and Father Kelly were present, and assisted the committee to discharge their duties to the satisfaction of all concerned.
