MISS AMY CASTLES. Received March 29, 9.51 a.m. BERLIN, March 29. The Cologne Opera House has engaged Miss Amy Castles for "Faust," "Hamlet," and "Romeo and Juliet."

EUROPEAN OIL MARKETS. Received Mari:h 29, 9.44 a.m. LONDON, March 28. The Pall Mall Gazette announces that the Standard Oil Trust and the European Petroleum Union have arrived at an agreement regarding the European markets. The Standard Oil Trust has secured control of many additional tank installations at Antwerp, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam.

THE IMPERIAL CONFERENCE. Received March 29, 9.44 a.m. OTTAWA, March 28. Sir Wilfrid Laurier (Premier), speaking in the House of Commons at Ottawa, said that he would be present at the opening of the' Imperial Conference, and hoped to discuss the question of preference with Mr A. Deakin, and arrange an agreement. Received March 30, 12.27 a.m. OTTAWA, March 29. "The only question Canada was interested in," said Sir Wilfrid Laurier, "and the only one we intend to bring before the Conference, relates to trade. Upon that we have nothing new to offer, though if it suits Great Britain to reciprocate, we are prepared to go a step further. Every nation composing the British Empire must allow a free choice of fiscal policy." Continuing, the Premer said that personally he preferred universal freetrade throughout the Empire. At present this was impossible. Under no condition would he consent to Canada being drawn in to the vortex of European militarism.

A RUSSIAN MURDERED. Received March 29, 9.51 a.m. TEHERAN, March' 28; A Russian has been murdered at Sabzwar, 215 miles west of Teheran. The body was thrown to dogs. The Russian bank was hastily closed, and the staff and the rest of the. colony fled to Mished. The military have been sent to Sabzwar.

NOTIFICATION OF PUBLIC MEETINGS. Received March 29, 9.51 a.m. PARIS, ; March 28. The French Chamber of Deputies adopted a Bill to suppress the notification of public meetings as'tyoted by the Senate.

THE GENERAL BAILLOUD INCIDENT. Received March 29, 9.44 a.m. PARIS, March 28. A few days ago General Bailloud, commanding the Twentieth Army Corps, was transferred to the command of the Twenty-sixth : Army Corps. This step was taken to mark the disapproval by the Minister for War, General Picquart, of an indiscreet speech by General Bailloud, in which he declared that war was possible, and that he hoped the Twentieth Army Corps would contribute to the restoration of the lost French Provinces (Alsace, and Lorraine) . The incident led to an animated debate in the Chamber of Deputes. General Picquart emphasised General Bailloud's indiscretion, and also blamed him for overstepping the prescribed functions in the military order of the day. The General was not disgraced, but had been transferred where he was better suited than at a post at the frontier. Confidence in the Government was voted. by 360 votes to 207.

LONDON MUNICIPAL POLITICS. LONDON, March 27. The Moderates secured a large victory at the elections of the London Boards of Guardians. "A RAPID AND TRUSTWORTHY RESTORATIVE." ! Received March 30, 1.17 a.m. LONDON, March 29. Sixteen prominent medical men have published a manifesto in the Lancet declaring that in disease alcohol is a rapid and trustworthy restoralive. The moderate use of it as an article of diet is usually beneficial to adults, especially women.

FRENCH NAVY. Received March 30, 12.21 a.m. PARIS, March 29. In the Chamber of Deputies, Admiral Bienaime severely attacked the French naval administration, declaring that the navy was in a state of disorganisation mainly owing to the incompetence of the heads of Government departments. The Chamber appointed a Commission to investigate the state of the navy.

MURDERER SENTENCED. Received March 30, 1.17 a.m. GENOA, March 29. Bontieff has been sentenced to*fouf years' imprisonment and twenty years' expulsion from Switzerland for the murder of Mr Muller, at Interlalcen, in' September last. The murdered man was mistaken for M. Durnovo, ex-Russian Minister.
