THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. SATURDAY, MARCH 30, 1907. THE REVOLT IN ROUMANIA.
The revolt in Roumania, which has been mentioned in our cable news during the past week, is assuming serious proportions, and is an indication of .the increasing unrest in the Balkan States. The instability of the political status that has been arbitrarily established in the south-east corner of Europe displays itself in an emphatic manner every spring. Roumanian Macedonia, Servia and Bulgaria are perennially disturbed, and European diplomacy is taxed to the uttermost to prevent the kindling of an international war arising from the clashing of rival interests. This unfortunate state of affairs is probably directly due to the jealousies which have prevented the establishment in the Balkans of any sufficiently strong authority to control the anarchic elements that are found there. Great Britain has to a large extent abandoned her political interest in the once dominant Eastern Question, but Russia, Austria and Germany are still engaged stale-mating one another. They are only agreed in preferring the maintenance of things as they are to any change which might benefit any one of them at the ex : pense of the prospects of the others. In consequence the Balkan States remain in a perpetual state of discontent. Some day it will probably be found impossible to smother the turmoil in the States, and armed intervention will be forced on the Powers of Europe— an armed intervention that may easily lead to a general conflagration.
