The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, 23rd inst:—The butter market is steady, an d prices are well maintained for choicest quality, owing to the s hbrt supply. The market is dull for second-class quality, and the supply exceeds the demand. ♦Current quotations are:—: Choicest New Zealand 101s, Argentine 100s, Victorian 995, Danish Ills per cwt. The cheese market is quiet, and prices are slightly weakeif with less . demand at 65s per cwt. The hemp market i 3 rather unsettled, ; and prices ' are silghtly weaker. Good fair grade, on the" spot, is quoted at £37; April-June shipments £36, and fair current Manila, on the spot, £39. The .cocksfoot seed market is firm, but buyers are not keen on business. Tliere is, however, no pressure to sell. The current quotation is 52s per cwt. Current quotations for Bradford tops are.: —36' a,': low crossbreds, Is s£d; 40's, low crossbreds, ls6d;, 44's, medium crossbreds, Is 6|d ;■ 50's, halfbreds, Is 10£ d; 56's, quarterbreds, 2s l£d; 60's, merinos, 2s 4£d. 1 Received March 25, 8.44' a.m. . LONDON, March 24. , North Island sheep, 3|d; best . brands, 3Jd. Lambs, Canterbury, medium and heavy, ssd; .North Island, 4 11-16 d. New Zealand beef, 180 to 2001bs, fair average qualities, ox fore-quarters, 2|d; ox hind-quar-ters, 3gd, River Plate fore-quarters, 2 9-16 d; hind-quarters, 23-16 d. Rest is unchanged. The tone of the wool market, is animated, and prices are fully maintained. Following prices were realised for the fleece portions of the /clips named:—Petane 13Jd, Puketoi 12Jd, Moawhango llfd. There have been catalogued to date 137,691 bales, of which number there have been sold 132,559 bales.
