WRECK OF THE MILDURA. FREMANTLE,March 23. The captain and crew of the steamer Mildura, which was wrecked at North-west Cape, have arrived. PERTH, March 23. Divers have reached the entombed miner in the Westralia East Mine, and have suppled him with food. His name is Varischetti. In order to reach him, the divers had to make their way down the shaft from the 900 feet level, through water, down a ladderway, to the 1,000 feet level. Then it was necessary to walk a distance of 300 feet along the 1,000 feet level then to ascend 30 feet up a rise, at the top of which Varicshetti is imprisoned, the compressed air acting as in a diving bell, and keeping him from being drowned.
Hughes, a miner, who is used to diving, volunteered to assist the regular divers who were brought to do the work. Hughes, in his third attempt, succeeded in reaching Varischetti, after a hard struggle, the rise being almost blocked with mud. Varischetti was intensely surprised when the diver emerged from the water below. Water and, food were supplied to him. An attempt will be made to get Varischetti out in a diving dress.
