With a view to the irrigation of an area one and a-half times greater than the area at present irrigated, it is proposed to add 19£ feet to the height of the Assouan dam, in Egypt. The cost will be £1,500,000. It is feared that the temples of Philae will be completely submerged.

The Egyptian Government has adopted a proposal to heighten the Assouan dam. The work will occupy six years. It is estimated that this will increase the annual value of the cotton crops by four millions.
