MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING.. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, and was presided over by the Deputy-Mayor (Cr Feist). There were also present: —Crs J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, T.. G. Hoar, W. Morris, E.. G Eton, J. C. Ewington and E. McEwen. \ Mr W. M, Eastbope, secretary of the Masterton School Committee, wrote With reference to the promise of the Mayor (Mr J. A. Renal I) to provide road spoil for the agricultural plots at the school. The Mayor had , promised to give the school a certain I amount of road spoil for the plots, but no spoil had been received. The committee had then bought the spoi 1 at considerable cost, and had paid for the cartage of it. It was now asked ■ that the Council should refund 'Jto the committee the amount paid for the spoil and cartage. The Engineer stated that 'the spoil promised by the Mayor had been given to the committee, and 100 'yards more. The Council were also in receipt of a bill for the cartage of the spoil to the school. After a brief discussion Crs Pauling, McEwen and Ewington were appointed a committee to confer with the headmaster of the school, and report on the matter. An amendment by Cr Temple that the Council could not see its way to refund the money was withdrawn. Mr D. Lett applied to have the drainage extended to a house he was building in Lincoln Road near the Railway Station. It was decided to accede to Mr Lett's request, provided he pays half the cost of the work. An applicaton by Mr J.Montgomery to extend the water mains to his residence in South Road was referred to the Works Committee. Crs Ewington, Pauling, Temple and McEwen were appointed a committee to consider Mr J McKee's complaint that he had not been paid sufficient for his contract on Colombo Road. The committee appointed to consider the question of granting a right-of-way behind Mr W. G. Beard's building into S. Matthew's Church grounds recommended that the right-of-way .should be granted provided it is asphalted at a cost of £l2. The report was adopted. On the motion of Cr Ewington it was decided to again approach the Government with reference to pushing on with the work of closer settle-, m'ent in the Masterton district.
