The rates outstanding amount to £1,687 8s 7d. / Owing to the slips on the railway line, yesterday, the Taylor-Carring-ton Company were unable to get through to Pahiatua, and had to cancel their engagement in that town last evening.

The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Featherston Golf Club:—Patron, Mr A. Matthews; president, Mr A. Cotter; vice-presidents, Dr. Palmer and Mr G. Fenwick;hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr Fenwick; captain, Mr A. Toogood. At the Fire Brigades Conference at Christchurch the following officers were elected for the ensuing year : President, Captain Hansen, Westport; vice-presidents, Superintendent Lomas, Spit, and Sub-Super-intendent Wildish, Gisborne; secretary, Superintendent Gilberd, Mapier (re-elected). When forwarding their annual returns or any communications to the Labour Department owners of shops and factories should be careful to put stamps on the envelopes, otherwise the communications will be returned to them unopened. The local Inspector of Factories has. had to return several letters to the senders lately as they did not bear postage stamps. At the Napier .Supreme Court, yesterday, Robert Landale Mayne pleaded guilty to attempted arson at Dannevirke. The prisoner's counsel sought to show that Mayne was eccentric and furnished evidence of good character. His Honor said that eccentricity did not show insanity, and the fact that prisoner was caught disguised and armed had not been satisfactorily explained. A sentence \ of six months' imprisonment was im(posed.

On account-of the flooded state of the country preventing the mustering of the sheep, the sale at Hautotara, Martinborotsgh, has been postponed till Monday next, March 25th. At the Exchange Hardware Stores Mr D. A. Morton has a full. supply of all the latest and most improved appliances for kitchen use. Housewives are invited to inspect.
Misses Whitcombe will open the Arcadia Tea Rooms, in the Exchange Buildings, this afternoon. The rooms have been beautifully fitted up,' and they will be conducted on the most up-to-date lines. Five reasons for their success are set out in a new advertisement inserted by Messrs Krahagen and Chapman, merchant tailors, Perry Street. The firm have to hand a choice selection of materials for winter wear and solicit inspection. On Saturday next, at 2.30 p.m., Messrs R. E. Howell and Co., Ltd.. will sell by auction a portion of the Empire Hotel buildings, to make room for the new structure. The auctioneers state that the portion to be sold is the newest part of the building, and contains a large amount of good sound timber, doors, windows and corrugated iron.

Two full sea sons ia the ahorteßt, period in which to deteimine if the machines have any injur ious effect on the cows or their yield. Many previous machines apneared to milk satisfactorily for the first season, but, until the I "LrIWRENCE-KENNEDY-GILLIES" was ■ proved, every machine resulted in disaster during the socond, but most frequently during the Ax-si season. The "L.K.G." can show five years' practical use, and before any other machine can stand level, even on paper, it must give a five years' guarantee against los> of yield or injury to the cows. Ada Jam-33 (husband's petition), on the ground of adultery with Cuthbert Twyman, who was joined as corespondent. Costs were given against co-respondent on the lowest scale. Mr W H. Cruickshank, land agent. Perry Street, reports having sold (in conjunction with Messrs J. D. Cruickshank and Co., Ltd.) Mr E. E. Chamberlain's farm at the Mtkimiki, ; oncaining 1,317 acres, together with- | 2,000 sheep and 100 head cattle, the I purchaser being Mr D. Foreman, late of Gladstone.
J. P. English, manager of J. O'KeetVs station, Lower Valley, was charged at the Featherston Police Court, on Monday, with having committed perjury in giving evidence against R. H. Robinson in a case of alleged assault heard at Featherston recently, English being the plaintiff. Accused was reminded till Monday next, bail being allowed. Councillor J. B. Tunbridge, of Hythe (England) was recently summoned for the alleged striking of an ex-councillor at a meeting of the local Ratepayers' Association. Councillor Tunbridge (says the . St. James' Gazette) was the man who arrested Jabez Balfour, and brought him back to England. After retiring from the London police force he became Commissioner of Police in New Zealand.
Mr D. Dobson, Borough Engineer, referred, at the complimentary social tendered to Cr Feist in the Borough Council Chambers, last evening; tothe question of trams for Masterton. He said that people in Masterton. laughed at the idea of trams,, but when it was* remembered that the cabs made over 100 trips between the ' Club Hotel and the Railway' Station everyday the question of trams for Masterton was not so far distant as people thought. He also, referred to the necessity of a destructor for refuse in Masterton.
