THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. TUESDAY, MARCH 19, 1907. THE PROPOSED WARD SYSTEM.
In regard to the suggested division of Masterton into wards, if the Borough Council were to take up this matter—which, as an expiring Council, they are most unlikely to do —they could not get an order for the division Gazetted before the 24th April, the statutory time fixed for the election. It would, therefore, be simply a waste of time for a deputation to wait upon the Council to place before them reasons for the suggested change. The only course now open to those burgesses who want to see the ward system established is to place before the electors nine of the strongest candidates they can find to advocate the adoption of the new system. . If a majority of them were returned they might then proceed forthwith to obtain an order for wards, but after the order had been Gazetted there would have tu be [another election immediately, and this time it would be to elect representatives for the wards. The cost to the town would be small, and if it resulted —as some think would be the case —in the wards returning to the Council their best business men, the expenditure of money and time in re-establishing the ward system would be most amply justified. The burgesses should be consulted upon this and other questions, and we hope there are those among us with sufficient public spirit to undertake this task. We are assured that a majority of the members of .the present ..Council are opposed to any change. . '\
