STATE COAL.
A QUESTION .FOR MASTERTON HOUSEHOLDERS. We are informed by Mr John Mackay that he has recently interviewed the Minister of Mines (the Hon. Jas. McGowan) in regard to, the sale of State coal in Masterton. Mr McGowan stated that he had already received three deputations in connection with supplying Masterton with State coal, and that he had, also, visited the town, when this was one of the matters under consideration. Mr McGowan said that as the : town was getting a new set of Borough Councillors they should take the matter up. The Government, he stated, were prepared to supply coal at bedrock prices, and that they were better prepared to do so than previously as they were getting more coal from the mines. The position simply amounted to this, that instead of the Government establishing a State coal depot in Masterton he thought the Borough Council could undertake to supply householders' requirements more advantageously.
