FREEZING COMPETITIONS.
At the October Show of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society j] prizes were offered for sheep and lambs suitable fdr freezing purposes. The conditions were (1) five wethers or maiden ewes in the wool, under 18 months, of any breed; most value for fleece and carcase; partly judged first day, then slaughtered and finally judged second day; (2) five wethers under 18 months (block test); (3) five lambs, average weight not under 28lbs nor over 381bs freezing weights; quality chief consideration; bred by exhibitor (block test). In these classes Mecsr;; W. C. Buchanan and W. Howard Booth had no opposition. Carcases were frozen and forwarded to London by the .lonic. The following report.; on these have been received : Pen 183, five wethers or maiden •ewes, und*r 18 months. —Mr Buchanan was the only exhibitor, and was awarded first prize. The judge's remarks were: ."All too gross for .freezing." The London remarks are: ""Very fine quality; short legs well ■covered; rather large." The hot •weight was 3831b5; frozen weight, -'3s9l'bs. The meat realised £7 Is 8d for 44st 61b, or at the rate of 4fd per • lb. Deducting shipping and London -charges, the sum of £5 6s lOd remains to owner's credit. < Five wethers undar 18 months (block test).—W. Howard Booth entered two pens, pen 191 being -awarded first prize and pen 190 • second before killing. After killing the award remained unaltered. In this class also the judge's remarks were: "Too gross for freezing." In London the verdict is: "Pen 191, "very good quality; some rather fat, rather large." Pen 190, "very good •quality; large; rather wasteful." The aggregate hot weight of both pens was 783.1b5; freezing weight, 7351b. Sales realised: Pen No. 191, £6 15s for 45st 21b; pen 190, £6 19s IlOd for 46st 51b, both at the rate of 4Jd per lb. Total, £l3 14s lOd. -Deducting shipping and London • charges the owner is credited with .£lO 2s lid. Five lambs, average weight not un*<ier 281b nor over 381b freezing weights. Howard Booth took first with •pen 193 and second with pen 192, the same award remaining •good after killing. The, judges haz:arded no remarks. The London experts assessed the values as follow: Pen 193, "very fine quality; well •finished; short legs, and meaty." Pen 192, "very good quality, handy size; fairly well finished." The hot weight of the whole was 3501b5; freezing weight 3291b5. Pen 193 realised £4 13s 4d for 20st 61b, and pan 192 £4 4s lid for ISst 71b, at the rate of 6gd per lb. • Total, £8 18s 3d. Deducting freezing and London charges, the owner nets £6 19s 2d.
