THE AMEER OF AFGHANISTAN. A RIOTOUS MEETING DISPERSED. Received March 15, 8.24 a.m. CALCUTTA, March 14. The Ameer's eldest son sent troops and dispersed a riotous meeting of fanatical Afghans near Jalalabad, on the "Afghanistan side of the Kyber Pass. The fanatics were protesting against the Ameer's dining and fraternising with the British, wearing European dress, and becoming a Freemason in India. ' SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A LORD. Received March 15, 7.46 a.m. LONDON, March 14. Lord William Neville has been remanded at the Westminster Police Court, on bail of on a charge of exchanging, by means of a trick, a box containing £4OO worth of pearl and diamond jewellery, belonging to Miller and Fitch (pawnbrokers), for a similar box containing, pieces of coal wrapped in tissue paper. REV. T. SPURGEON RESIGNS. Received March 15, 8.35 a.m. LONDON, March 14. The Rev. Thomas Spurgeon has tendered his resignation of the pastorate of the Tabernacle, ostensibly owing to his health, but it is stated that his action is due to dissensions in the congregation.. (The Rev. Thomas Spurgeon, son of the famous preacher, the late Rev. C. H. Spurgeon, is well known in this colony, having accepted the pastorate of the Baptist Church in Auckland in 1881, and being evangelist of the New Zealand Baptist Union from 1889 to 1893. He has been pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle since 1894. He married a Dunedin lady, Miss Rutherford, in 1888, and has issue a son and a daughter. The alleged dissensions, if they really existed, have not come in any conspicuous way into public view.) SELF-DENYING ORDINANCE. Received March 15, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, March 14. The Parliament of Montenegro, in the Malkans, unanimously reduced their allowances from £SOO to £250 per annum, regarding the latter figure as being more in accord with the principality's resources. CHANCELLOR OF OXFORD UNIVERSITY. Received March 15, 11.11 p.m. LONDON, Mar<-h 15.' Lord Curzon has been elected Chancellor of the Oxford University. The polling was:— Lord Curzon, 1,101; Lord Rosebery, 440.
