BABY FARMING. Received March 12, 10.12 a.m. PERTH, March 12. The woman Mitchell has been committed for trial for murder in connection with the baby-farming cases. The Coroner said that if the story of the witnesses was true, it denoted a condition of things which could only be described as filthy, loathsome, and immoral. The treatment of the children was disgusting and abominably cruel. DANCING AND THE THEATRE. Received March 12, 10.12 a.m. MELBOURNE, March 12. At the Methodist Conference a proposaljjthat church members be prohibited from attending balls or theatrical entertainments, or allowing their children to attend dancing classes, met with strong opposition. It was eventually decided to proceed with the next business. THE PLAGUE. Received, March 12, 8.21 a.m. SYDNEY, March 12. A girl at Woolloomooloo is suffering from plague. The .source of infection is not known. SYDNEY DEATH RATE. Received March 12, 8.21 a.m. SYDNEY, March 12. Referring to the administration of the City Council during the last five years, the Lord Mayor says the ♦improvement since the new Council took- office has been enormous. The death-rate in the city has been reduced from 15.8 per thousand to 10.9, while the infantile mortality has also I been reduced.
SUPPOSED WRECK. Received March 12,; 8.21 a.m. SYDNEY, March 12. The ship Queen Elizabeth, which has arrived at Newcastle, reports passing a quantity of Oregan timber in the vicinity of Palmerston Island. The captain is of opinion a vessel is ashore there.
