The Wellington Education Board has appointed the following teachers: —Sole teacher at Ihuraua, Miss G. Allen; sole teacher at Taratahi West, Miss F. Pritchard; assistant afc Newman, Miss E. Haslam; assistant at Masterton, Miss N. Hogg. Mr D. L. Astbury, farmer, of Eltham, has publicly announced his intention to contest the new Egmont division at the general elections. He will support the Government except on the land policy. He favours the freehold, an increase in the graduated land tax, and a decrease in the Customs duties on the necessaries of life. The city of Birmingham, England, has abolished the old steam tram cars for an up-to-date system . of electric traction, nearly fifty miles of track having to be laid, and about 10Q,OOo yards of copper wire carried overhead to supply current to the trolley arms, which are supported on 3,000 standards. The overhead equipment cost £26,000, and laying the permanent way cost £234,000. The new cars cost £IOO,OOO, and will be worked by the Corporation.
