MEAT CONTRACTS.

Received March 8, 9.50 p.m. LONDON, March 8. Messrs W. P. Reeves, High Commissioner for New Zealand, and T. A. Coghlan, Agent-General for New South Wales, interviewed the War Office authorities with reference to the meat contracts. In reply the authorities informed Messrs Reeves and Coghlan that they did not desire to deprive the colonies of the meat contracts for Gibraltar, as the meat supplied by New Zealand and Australia was satisfactory, but they desired to extend the area of supply in case of emergencies. They hoped the contracts would still go to Australasia. In future the contracts would specify frozen beef, thus giving Australasia an opportunity to tender. The troops henceforth would receive frozen mutton once a week and beef twice.
