THE SONOMA IN A HURRICANE.
News comes to Sydney by the Union Company's steamer Hauroto of damage to the pesent outward bound San Francjsco mail steamer Sonoma, which left Auckland for San Francisco on February Ist. While in the islands, the Hauroto received the news form one of the connecting vessels. From the meagre particulars to hand, the Sydney Morning Herald states that the Sonoma encountered the full force of the recent violent hurricanes when midway between Auckland and Pagopago, in Samoa. The wind gained terrific force, and the tremendous seas constantly bi'oke right over the vessel, doing considerable damage. Several of the hatches were stove in, and the decks were cleared of everything of a portable character. It is also reported that the cargo of the Sonoma suffered from large quantities of sea water which made its way into the holds. The Sonoma, on the short run* from Auckland to Samoa, was four days late. The extent of the damage done to the cargo has not transpired.
