MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING,
The Deputy-Mayor (Cr E. Feist) presided over" the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council held last ■evening. - There were also presenters J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, T. G. Hoar, W. Morris, E. G. Eton, J. C. Ewington, E. McEwen and J. H. Pauling. Mr A. Murray wrote drawing the Council's attention to the necessity for some improved method of carry.ing away the storm water from the front of his premises in Queen Street. The matter was referred to the Engineer. Messrs J. W. de Castro and Alex. Young wrote asking the Council to extend the gas mains from Worksop Road to their properties in Hessey Street, a distance of only a few chains. It was decided to instal an inch service along Hessey Street. Mr H. 0. Fowles wrote declining the offer of the Council in connection with the removal of an old culvert from the front of his property in Bannister Street. The Council had removed the old culvert and put in a riew one, the Engineer stating that the old culvert was inadequate. The Council had then decided to pay half the cost of the new culvert, and give back the old one to Mr Fowles. Cr Feist moved that the letter be received.
An amendment was proposed by Cr Ewington that the cost of the culvert be written off.
The amendment was lost, and the -motion was carried. The plans for the roading of the Wrigley Estate, as submitted by Mr C. Buxton, were adopted. The plans provide for connecting streets from Pine Street to Cole Street and to Villa Street, also to an unnamed street in the Renall Estate. The Council decided to acquire property for a road through Mr O'Keefe's property from the Wrigley Estate to Cole Street.
TheJjCounty Clerk wrote forwarding an account for £l7 16s sd, being the Council's share of the expenses in connection with the last Licensing Committee elections. The amount was passed for payment. It was decided to call the attention of the Public Trustee to the partially "burnt house that is standing in Hall •Street, and ask him to either pull down the house and remove the rubbish or rebuild. Cr Temple asked if the letter from the Council to the Valuation Department, asking that a valuation of the borough be made as early as possible this year, had had «ny effect. > The Town Clerk' said he had -visited the Valuation Department in Wellington, and had been given to understand that the valuation would be, complete by the end of the month. He now understood from Mr J. Fraser that the valuation of the borough would not be finished -until the end of April, which meant that the framing of the estimates and the striking of the rate would be delayed, as was the case last year. It was decided to write to the Valuation Department with regard to the matter. Accounts amounting to £1,035 12s 3d were passed for payment.
