EKETAHUNA.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

Tuesday, March 5. A gang of men, in charge of Mr Jackson, are laying the metallic circuit along the railway line to connect this town wi£h Pahiatua. Mr Tocker, who is connected with the local Presbyterian Church, intends to take his departure from this town shortly to resume his studies at Stewart Island. No arrangements have as yet been made regarding his successor. This matter is, however, having the attention of the Church Committee. A meeting of ratepayers was held last night. Mr A. H. Herbert occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance. The question of rating of the Town Area by the County Council'was fully discussed. A commitee , consisting of Messrs Herbert, Hastwell, Page, Meade and Prendeville, was appointed for the purpose of interviewing the County Council and requesting them to have a test case arranged, and in the meantime to hold the penalty for nonpayment of rates. The following is the result of the poll taken, yesterday, for the election of a representative for the West Riding of the Eketahuna County:—Charles Connor, 82; G.eorge Henry Hickman, 42; John Orr, 3; informal, 4. fcThe polling at the various booths resulted as follows:

Connor: Eketahuna 12, Rongokokako 19, Nireaha 32, Hamua 4, Hukanui 15. Hickman: Eketahuna 23, Rongokokako 7, Nireaha 5, Hamua 2, Hukanui 5. Orr: Eketahuna 0, Rongokokako 1, Nireaha 0, Hamua 1, Hukanui 1. Informal: Eketahuna 1, Nireaha 3. The returning officer, Mr R. J. McLean, declared Mr Chas. Connor duly elected. The spell of fine weather that has been experienced here has afforded farmers an opportunity to dip their sheep. Others have taken advantage of the weather to burn off old timber and logs. At present the weather is broken.
