THE_NEW HEBRIDES. Received March 5, 11.25 p.m. MELBOURNE, March 5. Mr A. Deakin states that the Anglo-French New Hebrides Convention will not become' operative until the officials appointed have been sent out. No intimation has when this will be done. HOT WEATHER. Received' March 5, 11.25 p.m. SYDNEY, March 5. The weather is excepionally hot. The greater part of the State has been much benefited from thunder rains. PLAGUE, Received March 5, 11.25 p.m. SYDNEY, March 5. A case of plague has occurred in the city. FEDERAL MAIL CONTRACT. Received March 5, 9.58 a.m. SYDNEY, March 5. Mr Carruthers, the State Premier, declines to make any statement regarding the < suggestion that the States should guarantee the debentures of tha syndicate which has the mail contract. It is reported that several mercantile firms in the different States have offered to take a substantial proportion of the mail syndicate debentures.
Mr Clark, the syndicate's agent, states that a commercial house in Adelaide has offered to take £IOO,OOO of debentures.
