TRENTHAM RIFLE MEETING.

By Telegraph—Press Association

TRENTHAM, March 4

The morning broke fine, but about 8 o'clock a slight mist came across from the South, and throughout the day the weather was just about as tricky as Trentham representatives wanted it.

About 9 o'clock light rain fell, but it was not of long duration, and by noon the weather conditions were all that could be desired, except that the "fish-tail," "cork-screw," and other variations of Trentham wind were present while the Otago Match was in progress, and in the last match counting for the final aggregates. The Volunteer Match (600 and 700 yards, 10 shots) was shot off. The | shooting was most erratic, and did ' not average inners, which was conclusive proof that rifle club men as a body are miles ahead of volunteers in the handling of rifles. All through | it is forced home that volunteers can- j not hold their own with rifle club | men. There may, of course, here and there be an exceptional case, but as a rule the prize list shows that it is the exception rather than the rule. The chief interest to-day was, of course, centred in the aggregates, and the championship came up for a deal of discussion. When the shooting finished on Saturday evening W. Cox, of the Victoria Rifles, was at the head of the aggregate with 339, then came Ayson 338, Cameron 335, Perrin (Linton) 334, A. Ballinger 333, "W. On opening this morning Cox fell away at 800 yards, only getting on 37.
