FEDERAL MAILS.
MELBOURNE, March 2. Mr Clarke, agent of the syndicate that has in hand the Australian mail contract, asserts that the statement that his mission is connected' with the construction of torpedo boats is a harmless fiction, and will be quite disproved when the facts are announced. Mr Bent, Premier of Victoria proposes that each of the States should guarantee £150,000 of the mail syndicate's debentures. The other members of his Cabinet do not take a complacent view of this proposal. Mr Kidston, Premier of Queensland, declares that he will not entertain the suggestion for one moment. Mr Evans, Premier of Tasmania, says he has heard nothing of the proposal, but, speaking on the spur of the moment, he views it unfavourably. Received March 3, 4.34 p.m. LONDON, March 2. Sir Thomas Sutherland (Chairman of the Peninsula and Orient Company), in a letter to the Times, said he was unaware that there was conspiracy against the mail project. If any of the eminent shipbuilders who evolved the scheme, and who apparently knew but little of the Australian trade, care to see the figures regarding the working of the 10,000 ton mail ships he would give them some startling information. The Peninsular and Orient Company contemplate laying up some of the largest steamers for a considerable portion of the year in preference to running costly voyages to Australia.
