WELLINGTON LAND BOARD.
After ten years' service on the Wellington Land Board, Mr John Stevens, M.H.R., retires by effluxion of time, and, being a member of Parliament, he is not eligible for re-ap-pointment. At the meeting of the Board on Thursday, Mr Stevens, in the course of some valedictory remarks, took the opportunity of thanking the Commissioner, Mr Strauchon, for the consideration he and the other members had always shown him, and also thanked! the officers of the Board for their courtesy to him at all times when seeking information regarding public requirements. The Commissioner had, remarked Mr Stevens, acted with the greatest impartiality in carrying on his difficult position, and if he had erred, it was on the side of mercy, always giving the benefit of the doubt to the "man on the mud." If he had had his own choice, he (Mr Stevens) would have continued to be a member of the Board, because the work was most interesting and instructive to him, and it was always a pleasure to be able to assist in some small degree, by advice and otherwise, those settlers who required all the assistance their fellow-colonists could give them. The Commissioner (Mr Strauchon) spoke of the valuable services Mr Stevens had rendered as a member of the Board for many years, and his remarks were endorsed by Messrs Reece and Dawson.
