AUSTRALIAN MAILS.
Received February 27, 8.20 a.m LONDON, February 26.
Sir Thomas Sutherland, chairman of the Peninsular and Oriental Company, and a British delegate to the forthcoming Maritime Conference, was interviewed with regard to the assertions of the Federal PostmasterGeneral, Mr Austin Chapman. Mr Chapman recently stated that powerful influence is being brought to bear in England to block the mail contract ; and that the Commonwealth Government will protect Australian interests, and, as far as possible, those of the contractors. No ring or combination will, Mr Chapman said, be allowed to impede the progress of the Commonwealth. Sir Thomas Sutherland declines to add anything to the statement which he made at a meeting of the Peninsular and Oriental Company in December.
