It is reported to the Persian Parliament that the peasants of Khorassan are selling their children like sheep to the Turkomans at Ashkabad, in order to pay- their taxes.
(Khorassan is the most northeasterly province of Persia. The Turkomans are qne of the pastoral races —conquered by Russia —of the Russian Trans-Caspian Territory, of which Ashkabad is the capital.) FAMINE IN CHINA. SHANGHAI, February 22. Captain Kirton, representing, the Foreign Famine Committee, has informed the Viceroy of Shanghai that the famine is the outcome of neglect of public works and drainage. Ten million persons are stricken, half of whom are doomed unless energetic measures are adopted. THE WATERLOO CUP. LONDON, February 22. The Waterloo Coursing Cup was won by Longspan, who defeated Clanbridge. RESEARCH IN COLONIAL PRODUCTS. LONDON, February 22. The Mercers' Company have given £I,OOO to the Imperial Institute for scientific research in connection with economic products of the colonies and protectorates of the Empire.
