RIFLE SHOOTING.
EXHIBITION CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURGH, February 18. The Exhibition Rifle Meeting was opened, to-day, at Red Cliffs in splendid ■ weather. The range is located about six miles from Christchurch, and had been specially prepared for the meeting, the Government having made a grant for the purpose. The Council has formulated a time-table for the meeting, which limits it to six days, but unless the shooting is much faster than was the case to-day a number of ranges will have to be cut out. At a special meeting of the Council the prize list was augmented by £2OO cash and a number of trophies. The meeting opened with the Otago Match, seven shots, at 200 yds, 500 yds, and 600 yds. As there were only twenty targets, competitors were split into two sections of 180 each. The best scores in the first section were: — Kennard, Linton, 34; Bradley, Dimedin, 34; Reed, Pongaroa, 34; Collett, Perham, Henry, Handley, and Walton 33. The second section started at 11 o'clock. A. R. Ayson, Murikiku, put on the possible. Muir (Kenloch), Ching (Nelson), Turner (Karori) made 34; Ching (Lyttelton), McCalley (Australia), Feast (Opaki), Robinson' (Christchurch), Duley (Dannevirke), Drummond (Wanganui), Bourford (Timaru), Mould (Duvauchelle), T. Jack (Christchurch), Geddes (Green Island), Lee (Oreti), 33. The 500 yds opened after lunch. By this time the conditions were practically perfect. Trooper P. M. Ayson (Murukiku) put on the possible, but he had only got 28 at the 200 yds. , Bradley (Dunedin), who came back with 34, put on a like score here, which placed him top for the two ranges. The other principal scorers were:—Lindsay, Studholme, 34; R. J. King, Opaki, 34; McConnell, Lhristchurch, 34; Craw, Linton, 34; Mac Knight, Naseby, 34; Thorpe, Wairoa, 34; Judd, Petone, 34; Wain, Studholme, 34; McLeay, Masterton, 34. The light Was failing when the 600 yds was commenced. Captain Salter, executive range officer, decided not to fire the second section in the match till to-morrow.
