THE EXPLOSION AT WOOLWICH.
Received February 13, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, February 12. The explosion in the chemical research department attached to Woolwich Arsenal was chiefly an explosion of cordite. It was heard at a spot fifty-one miles distant, but south of the river Thames it was heard for a distance of only three miles, owing to hills intervening. The explosion occurred in the early morning in the laboratory magazine, when the workmen were absent. A gasholder containing 330,000 ft of gas collapsed, the gas taking fire.
