EXHUMATION OF A BODY.
THE LATE MISS HOWELL. The body of Miss Victoria Howell, who died at Castlepoint on January 23rd last, and was buried at flMasterton, on January 25th, was exhumed, yesterday morning", in the presence of Inspector Ellison and Dr. Fyffe, of Wellington. Some time before <=he died Miss Howell was seized with an attack of influenza, which was prevalent in Masterton at the time, and was attended by Dr. W. S. Ross. Subsequently the deceased went to Castlepoint to recuperate, but some two days later was taken seriously ill. Dr. Dawson, of Te Nui, was called in, but the deceased rapidly became worse, her illness terminating fatally, as has already been stated. Dr Dawson, of Te Nui, gave a certificate to the effect that death was due to an internal cancerous growth. The relatives of the deceased consulted Messrs Bunny and Dolan, solicitors, who made application to the Colonial Secretary, on behalf of the relatives, to have the body exhumed. The doctors engaged in the case, also, recommended that such a course should be pursued, and the necessary order was made by. the Colonial Secretary. After the exhumation, yesterday, Dr. Fyffe made a brief examination of the body, btit was unable to discover any cancerous growth. A portion of the stomach and parts of some of the internal organs have been forwarded to Wellington for analysis at the hands of the Government analyst. The late Miss Howell was nursed during her .illness by a Miss Hall, her partner in a nursing establishment in Cornwall Street.
