RUSSIA.
A DESPERATE REVOLUTIONARY. GOVERNOR OF PENZA ASSASSINATED. Received February 10, 4.45 p.m. ST. PETERSBURG, February 9. M. Alexandrovski, Governor of Penza, in Eastern Russia, was leaving a theatre, in company with the Assistant Chief of Police, when a youth, armed with a revolver, fired, killing both. j The assassin then rushed into the theatre and shot at the manager, who was trying to arrest him. The bullet missed the manager and killed a policeman. The assassin next i-ovtgV. refuge in ths cloakroom. Trw. 1 locked the duor, and til<2 assassin, finding himself trappec, committed suicide. The bullets used were poisoned with cyanide of potassium. The revolutionaries had condemned M. Alexandrovski, who was formerly a Commissioner of the Red Cross organisation, to death, on the ground that his mismanagement and corruption had caused the deaths of innumerable wounded soldiers.
