NIREAHA.
(From Our Own Correspondent). Wednesday. For some days this district has been enveloped in smoke. Several settlers took advantage of the dry weather and set alight to their bush. On Thursday' a gale raged, and drove the fire in all directions. Towards evening quite a number of homesteads were in danger, and were only saved by the strenuous efforts of the farmers. During the gale a large window in the cheese factory was blown in. The rain which fell on Saturday put the fires out. The friends of Mr James Daysh, who has been seriously ill, will be pleased to hear that he is recovering. Messrs Quinlan and Popplewell intend removing their sawmill plant to Mr A. M. Berry's section, where they have cutting rights for five years. Mr McLachlan, the Masterton County Engineer, paid a visit to Nireaha with a view to inspecting one of Mr Dawson's bridges. Most of our farmers have harvested their oat crops, which have been excaptionally heavy this season. It is second-hand advice to urge the growing of hay or other winter fodder for dairy cows, but the slowness which some show in adopting it is amazing. Many farmers overstock during the summer and give themselves hard work milking when a smaller herd properly fed would give as good milk results, and save many deaths which occur in the winter through nothing else but starvation.
