CARTERTON S.M. COURT.

(From a Correspondent). At the Carterton S.M. Court, yesterday, before Mr W. P. James, S.M., Messrs J. Biggins (Taratahi Hotel) and P. E. Debreceney (Club Hotel, Carterton), were charged with having sold liquor on a Sunday. Constable Griffiths prosecuted, and Mr C. A. Pownall appeared for the defence. Mr Pownall pleaded guilty on all the charges, but urged that as the offence was a first offence, and considering the disastrous consequences of an endorsement the S.M. might see This way to convict without endorsing the licenses. Mr James said that it was quite refreshing to hear publicans admit their offence, and in the circumstances he would not endorse the licenses. He warned the publicans against the risk they took for sixpence or a shilling in selling liquor on Sunday. He considered Mr Debreceney's the lighter offence, and fined him 40s. He fined Mr Biggins £ls.
