PONGAROA.
[ (From Our Own Correspondent). "PONGARpA, Monday. On Wednesday last tush fires, aided by a nor'-wester, occurred at Pukehinau. Starting at Horoeka the fire swept through Mr Gillam's property, and, besides destroying several head of cattle, did [considerable damage to fences, yards," etc. Messrs Gardner and Yeoman's sawmill had a narrow escape from being destroyed. Through the strenuous efforts of the settlers, and mill hands, "the mill was saved. A cowshed adjoining the mill, and belonging to Mr F. Giddens, was destroyed, and also the residence of Mr Fred Packer. Mr Wilcox's store was for a time in danger of being burned; About 1.30 o'clock next morning the wind dropped. Thanks to the efforts of Mr Cooper, the manager, the Waihi creamery was saved. The posts, etc., for the Pongaroa-Waioni-Horoeka telephone line have been laid, and the work/of erecting the wires will no doubt be'commenced shortly. ,/ '
