MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

WORKS COMMITTEE. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Works Committee was held last evening. Cr E. McEwen presided, and therei were also present—Crs J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, W. Morrig, E. G. Eton and J. C. Ewington. Apologies for absence were received from Crs E. Feist and T. G. Hoar. Mr E. Waite, representing Messrs Seaton and Sladden, civil engineers, waited on the Council with reference to the Council's decision that the road through the Ngamatawa block, in the Renall Estate, should be straightened. He stated that the angle in the road was shown on the original plan, and it was rather late now to order the angle to be taken out. He also stated that it would cost between £3O and £4O to alter the road as it stands at

present. ■- * ' . The Engineer said that his did not notice any ,angle in the plans; he only saw the angle when he visited the locality. It was understood on both sides that the road was to be a straight one. He added that it would be far better for the Renall Estate to bear thel cost of straightening the road now than to hand a crooked road down to posterity. In answer to a question by Cr Temple, Mr Waite said the Renall Trustees objected to pay the extra amount now required to straighten the road. He also stated that it was an impossibility to straighten the road unless the grade of the road' through Cole's Estate was altered. Cr Ewington moved that the Council adhere to their previous resolution that the road be made straight. Crs Temple said he wassorry that the Renall Trustees would be put to extra cost to straighten the road, but he favoured the straightening of the road. He added ,that the town was full of crooked roads, arid /he thought the practice should be stopped. On the motion of Cr Eton, seconded by Cr Elliott, it was decided to meet at 9 o'clock this morning to inspect the road. Cr Ewington withdrew his motion. Mr C. B. Buxton, submitted an amended plan of the subdivision and roading of the Wrigley Estate for the Council's approval. He submitted suggestions with regard to the taking of land required in the vicinity. The matter was referred t<ra committee consisting .of , Crs Elliott, Eton, Ewington and Temple. A petition was received from forty-eight ratepayers asking that the resolution that had been passed to the effect that Michael |Street be widened be adhered to and that the work be carried out before the ensuing winter. Crs Morris, Pauling, and Ewington were appointed a committee to enquire into the matter. • With regard to the widening of Makora Street, it was decided that the street shouljl be widened where the owners gave their consent; and to notify the owners that the Council is prepared to make a footpath on one side of the street within six months. '

Cr Pauling was authorised to sign all contracts on behalf of the Council, vice v the Mayor, who was absent in Auckland.

The Engineer was instructed to submit a report on all works set out in the, £25,000 'loan schedule that have been completed.
