THE PREMIER.
ADDRESS AT AUCKLAND. THE LAND BILL. A NEW ANNOUNCEMENT. By Telegraph —Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 27. The Premier was entertained at luncheon at Pukekohe on Saturday. He then performed the ceremony of unveiling a photograph of the late Premier in the school at Pukekohe, and also the Seddon Memorial Lamp at the same township yesterday afternoon. Short speeches were made by Sir Joseph and Mr Massey, M.H.R. In answer to a deputation Sir Joseph stated that the Government would contribute towards the cost of placing the roads and bridges damaged by the late floods. Last evening the Premier addressed a largely attended public meeting in Auckland, the Mayor presiding. Sir Joseph dealt with various subjects, including the Land Bill and Native land proposals, much on the line of previous speeches. He made a new announcement in regard to the Land Bill, saying that next session the endowment proposals would be brought forward in a separate measure, it being considered that the House would be able to come to a judgment' on the matter with more ease if this subject were separated from the question of tenures. An alteration in the tariff would be introduced in the direction of removing the duties from the necessaries of life, and permitting raw material required to be used for manufactures in the colony to come in free of duty. The alterations generally speaking would not go upon the lines of extreme protection, but on lines of judiciously building up our industries. There were other matters which would probably be dealt with, including the classification and superannuation scheme for the whole of the State servants. At +he conclusion of the address a vote of thanks to the Premier and an assurance of confidence and the goodwill of the people on his departure to England to attend the Imperial Conference was accorded to Sir Joseph on the motion of Mr J. Evans, Vice-Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce. Sir Joseph will leave on Monday evening for Sydney en route to England.
